CEQA Exemptions
Chapter 31 of the SF Administrative Code requires a clear timeline for appeals for California Environmental Quality Act documents. Section 31.04 (h)contains the definitions for the approval action of projects and Section 31.16 outlines the process for appealing determinations.
To identify the approval action for a specific project, review the environmental document. If a project qualifies for an exemption, it will receive an Exemption Checklist.
To check if a project got Planning Commission approval or if the Planning Department issued a Planning Approval Letter for an entitlement, please visit the Property Information Map and search for related documents under a project’s record number(s) for more details.
For more information on the CEQA appeal process please refer to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors.
Using the Map
GREEN DOTS represent projects where the environmental review is complete.
BLUE DOTS represent projects that are currently receiving environmental review. Environmental documents can be found by selecting a circle and clicking the "more details" button - this will take you to our Permit and Project Tracking System (the document will be under the "attachments" tab).
Click on any circle on the map for more information and the "more details" button to review the project in our Permit and Project Tracking System.
The "Menu" icon at the top of the map provides you with an interactive tutorial related to navigating the CEQA Map and signing up for alerts.
The "Filters" tab on the upper left allows for you to search, narrow results to applications received within a certain timeframe, or search by application type (CEQA Exemptions, Negative Declarations, or Environmental Impact Reports).
The "CEQA Alerts" tab is used for signing-up to receive email alerts related to new Environmental Applications received within a specific geography.
Public Agency Exemptions
Exemptions for projects sponsored by public agencies are provided below. Many public project exemptions are not displayed on the Exemptions Map above as they span large geographical areas. For exemptions that do not require a noticed public hearing, an "Approval Action Date" is displayed in the list below. To find a specific public project, move the mouse pointer inside the box below and press the Ctrl key + F (Windows) or Command + F (Mac) to bring up a search box in your browser.
Click on the 'More Details' button on any row in the table to view further information about the project including the Exemption determination document. Use the scroll bars to move down the table.
